Virtual Synagogue revised

Numerous suggestions from experts have been incorporated; the new version of the reconstructed synagogue is now available.

In September 2023, we presented our virtual reconstruction of the synagogue on Universitätsstraße, which was destroyed during the Nazi era, to the public for the first time: a journey through time to before 1938 using virtual reality glasses. The building shows a reconstruction of the place of worship true to the original, including its integration into the current cityscape.

The feedback from the Marburg population was overwhelming. The magnificent reconstruction was featured in the local press and was also worthy of a detailed report on Hessenschau. Anyone who wanted to could experience the building live at INOSOFT's Cappel location. Last year, the team welcomed its 500th visitor.

“We haven't been idle since then,” explains Ellen Paulus. “We have meticulously implemented the suggestions we received from members of the Jewish community and interested experts, and we are very proud of the revised version.”

The most important improvements include:

  • The walls and ceilings of the synagogue have been given a new, carefully selected coat of paint that brings out the original atmosphere of the room even better.

  • The dome, a central architectural element, as well as the Torah shrine and lectern have been completely redesigned.

  • A special highlight is the opening of the mikvah in the basement, which can now be entered virtually, including the historic bathtub. This area provides a fascinating insight into ritual practices.

What's more, visitors can now touch and move objects virtually. Anyone entering the synagogue can now pick up one of the lamps and illuminate every corner.

“The ability to touch something further enhances the feeling of being in another world,” Paulus continues. “The revision of the 3D reconstruction allows users to experience the synagogue in an unprecedented way. The combination of historical accuracy and modern technology creates an immersive experience that is both informative and emotionally touching.”
