On June 12, 2026, Anthropic shut down its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models for all customers—not for technical reasons, but in response to an export control directive from the U.S. Department of Commerce, which was justified on grounds of national security. Since the directive targeted foreign users, the only option was to completely deactivate the models; the provider’s other models continue to operate.
This is the first time a leading provider has withdrawn a publicly available model following a government order.
